I've just re-watched the entries series on DVD over the last month, and I think it's much more deserving that the 3.7 rating it currently has. I'll admit the first season was pretty bad - it was trying too hard to be a direct copy of the original series. I could see if someone just watched a few of the first episodes they'd have a bad opinion. By the time it got to the 3-4 season it got pretty good with a good cast that wasn't changing constantly. Screech did become more of a cartoon character in the last few seasons and could be annoying. Episode order didn't seem to make a sense a lot of time, I'm guessing that's due to the original doubling up of episodes.
One a side note, I've now watched the Ms Bliss series and starting watching the original series again (instant viewed on netflix) and It's surprising how much more of the episode plots and lines I remember of these older series than the new class. I guess I must have watched a ton of repeats over and over when I was younger and the new class only once or twice

I agree, although I think season 2 is when the show started to get pretty good, but each season was a mixed bag. The cast tried their best with what they had to work with, but could never gel like the original cast did. Screech became increasingly more annoying each season, but Mr. Belding was nearly as bad. He went from being a respectable authority figure in the original series to nothing but a cartoon character in the later seasons of The New Class. Just take for example the mall episodes with him working with Screech at a candy store. I mean seriously, what the hell?
Just curious, is Miss Bliss in it's original untampered form on Netflix or is it the repackaged syndication version we see on TBS?

I don't remember the original enough to tell the difference -- it does the "saved by the bell" style intro, so it can't be the most original form.

Yeah, episode order has been a problem for the Bell DVDs and not just for The New Class either! The Original Series has the same problem as well. I think it's mostly due to the DVD companies(Lions Gate and Image Entertainment) deciding to place the episodes in the order they were originally aired and for whatever reason, NBC aired both series all out of wack. You'd think they could have gotten Peter Engle or another producer of the show to help them put these episodes in proper order(or as close to it as possble), but alas..
Here's something that might help you though. A guy at the sitcomsonline.com board went through the painstaking process of making an episode order guide that's about as spot on as you're likely to ever get. If you're desperate to watch the episodes in the most logical order, you could definitely print this baby out. But keep in mind you'll have to swap out discs from time to time as well, so it could be a bit of a pain in the butt.

Yea I watched the series regularly when it was on Saturday mornings and I always have liked the New Class. I think it gets more flack then it really should have since most fans like the original. I am so happy that it's out on DVD now.

This show has always been kind of a mystery to me. I remember watching the original SBTB during it's original run on Saturday mornings because I was in junior high/high school when it was on. The New Class started during my senior year. I usually had something going on during Saturdays, whether work or sports related, so I maybe saw 1 episode. Then I went to college and same thing. I was pretty shocked that after I graduated in 1999 and got my first "real" job, the show was still on. Mr. Belding and Screech were the only 2 I recognized.
So I've never really experienced The New Class, and I'm kind of surprised it hasn't had much of a life in syndication even though it has way more episodes than the original. I can only remember it being in syndication a few times ever, mainly on USA, and that's been a long time ago now, probably 6-7 years at least. The original has been a stable on TBS in the mornings forever. I'm not compelled enough to get the DVDs but I do wish one of the cable networks would start showing the reruns; or even start working in The New Class episodes during the 2 hour block on TBS since they already work in Good Morning Miss Bliss episodes and The College Years episodes.

I think the "New Class" cops a lot of flack because of it's ever changing cast.
However if you look at other Peter Engle shows it seems to be a trend for them. Hang Time, another show that was part of the TNBC lineup, was the worst offender of them all. Almost every season you would loose 2-4 characters, and then have some new guys come in.
The thing that annoyed me the most, is that they never did any eps where they explained where the older characters went to. All was said in the first ep of the new seasons, was that they had moved away to some other location. And that somehow the new kids, had known the others the whole time. But yet we had never seen them in the halls of the school, or even heard them mentioned before. However there was one exception to the rule, Rachel, was in an ep of season 1 before coming regular in season 2.
I'm glad that this is on DVD, along with the original and the college years. Also glad that Shout have put on the first 2 seasons of California Dreams. Now all got to hope for is remaining CD and the other Peter Engle line up shows. Then truly will be happy!!
