I don't really remember that College Years episode but in the Malibu Sands episode, Slater wasn't that good at translating Spanish.

Slater's charater was created to be an Italian tough guy. Although Mario Lopez certainly doesn't look Italian, he was so good, they changed the part a little for him. But his culture was never really brought up in the series. (Except for 2 small instances, when he translates English to Spanish to the Malibu Sands chef, and his family ancestory project when he discovered one of his ancestors was a bullfighter....Spain most probably.) In TCY, they discovered his roots and he found out his father changed his name to Slater from Sanchez to join the American Army. Pero, Mario si habla espanol. He was just doing a job.

I just watched this particular ep for the first time today. And now I find this thread. Talk about freaky LOL same here, its funny though, the girl who led the sit in in this epsiode reminded a lot of Jessie Spano, it seems that Slater likes the rebellious types

I always thought they kinda dropped the ball on Slater and Spanish. He wasn't the best tranSLATOR (get it? ;D), but he could speak a little Spanish. TBS just had on "Slater's War" at 7:30am today and he really didn't know anything in Spanish. So I think the writers dropped the ball on that one.
