Why is Jerry's voice so high and winy? Just watch Male Unbonding or the Stakeout and you'll hear exactly what I mean. He talks so slow, and in a completely artificial voice that we never hear in the next 8 seasons. Its definitely not his normal voice, and it definetly gets in the way of the shows. In the stock tip he doesn't do this nearly as much. I think the stock tip is probably the best of season 1. in terms of writing I think the stakeout and male unbonding are probably better, but jerrys acting throws the whole thing off. and not to mention Kramer! Male unbonding is by far the worst kramer ep. Just the way he says "oh Hey Jerry" when jerry walks in while he's on the phone shows that Richards had no idea what to do with the character. The Stock tip is miles ahead of the other three in terms of becoming the show we know. Kramer isn't a doofus, and Jerry is starting to make sarcastic, realistic remarks and talking in his NORMAL voice.

Kramer kinda creeps me out in The Stock Tip, he looks like a yuppie version of Goofy.

And George apparently acts like Woody Allen for the first few episodes, I can kinda see that.

I really don't like Woody Allen. I mean, he always makes me feel anti-Semitic, & I'm Jewish.

In the first season the show was still finding it's feet and the first ep where George came to life IMO was the Phone Message sublime stuff.

the phone message is the best of seasons one and two- i agree about george. I think the masterpiece of the first three seasons is the tape- why is this ep so underrated?

The masterpiece is The Chinese Restaurant. It's so good that a local satire show, The Chamber Quintet, paid tribute to it in one of their sketches. They actually managed to do it without stealing anything. It's a very good show that's definitely Python/Seinfeld inspired, I really wish you guys could see it.

I always find it interesting how there will always be one fan who tends to stray from the common opinion. It's safe to say most Sein fans consider THE CHINESE RESTAURANT a great episode, and probably the best from the earlier seasons. I was at another Seinfeld board the other day and a fan claimed his least favorite episode was CR. I find that hard to believe, even worse than all the stinkers from the first three seasons?
That episode was probably the epitome of "the show about nothing." Because nothing really happens in that episode, but MOST people at some point in their lives have experienced exactly what Jerry, Elaine and George went through in that restaurant.

I agree with the idea that it is the ideal episode about nothing. But that doesn't make it the funniest. I find that the situations in the phone message, and the tape, and the boyfriend to be funnier. My opinion of the Chinese Restaruant is that it is an above average episode. However, in context it is great because the show didn't know exactly what it was doing beforehand (the ex-girlfriend, IMO the worst episode ever), and really this is the defining point where it grasps onto a concept, which it was able to run with and in the process making the show popular. Once it became more mainstream and popular (season 3), the show was able to branch out into different directions, using brilliant ideas to create brilliant situations which gave us all-time classics.

The Chinese Restaurant produced hilarious moments. The whole Cartwright scene, hilarious yet so true to life, I could totally imagine it happening to me. Another scene like that is in The Fix-Up when George says "Why can't I just come up to someone & say 'Hey, I'm George'" & then this bird passes by & he just smiles & doesn't say anything, that was so good, my entire life is like that
