can someone explain...
and if its done live for an audience, what if they make a mistake do they redo it, infront of everyone...

There is a live studio audience, also the Monks restaurant set is right next to Jerry's Apartment so the audience can see both sets. As for the street scenes or Central Park scenes etc.. they are usualy filmed before hand and shown on big TVs in front of the audience where the laughter is then recorded. And yes they make mistakes all the time infront of the audience, they simply redo it until they get it right. In later seasons it's possible that the laughter was canned even though they still had an audience.

I was under the impression that in the last season they rarely had one, and it was mostly all canned laughter. At least I know that was the case during the last few episodes because they didn't want the "word" to get out on how they were going to end the show.

there is always an audience-- however the laughter is usually canned
the only time it struck me as not being canned were in seasons 4 and part of five
applause for kramer every entrance, applause for elaine upon entrance, long bouts of laughter forcing the actors to pause a great length before saying their next line
i read somewhere they got rid of the live audience track because the audience became to rowdy-- to many applauses and such

so that means they probably started canning it around season five. Yup, you can tell in the later seasons that they laughter is canned. First of all, because the audience laughs at things that aren't funny.

And also because there are at least THREE ocassions in most episodes were you can hear certain people laughing in EXACTLY the same way...clearly a recording or something.

Come on--- like they never do this in seasons 1 or 2 or 3. Half the jokes weren't worthy of laughter.

It was more obvious in the latter seasons...

What do you think about the use of canned laughter in Seinfeld? Do you think it adds to the show or is just annoying?

I think its alright in Seinfeld. They haven't over used it, like in other sitcoms (for example married with children). When a show over does it and a actor has to pause before they say their next line it is very annonying Which i dont htink happened too often in seinfeld. Also during season 3 and 4 (i think) they appualed Kramer when ever he made his entrance which i found very annoying.

i agree with you about the kramer thing, although it was more season 4 and part of 5. the applause was definetly not canned. its when they got rid of it that it became canned reactions.

I've always found the laughter annoying mostly. It would be quite interesting to watch an episode without. My guess is that it would be better.

I hate the laughter. So irritating I find it. The canned laughter is the worst because I've heard a certain moron's laugh AT LEAST in 20 different episodes, I can't stand it.
