That obviously means that all new sitcoms use canned laughter.

This is the classic argument of audience members. "Without the laughs it would be weird." Yeah, that's why Malcolm In The Middle is doing so miserably as a show. Guess what - things that are traditionally considered 'weird' are the stuff of innovation. Gimme something other than weird and I'll hear your side. But right now, I think it would be awesome to have the option to see Seinfeld without laughs. See (for me at least) the thing that fills in the 'weird' pauses are MY laughs.

it would be wierd not because of the absence of a laughtrack, but because the show was filmed with intention for a laugh track, and thus pause.

Malcom in the Middle HAS NO such pauses, because there was never any intention to include a laughtrack.

Watching Seinfeld without the laugh track would be interesting for 5 minutes, then the novelty would wear off. If would be a waist of time and something the mass audience wouldn't care about.

GOOD! I hate stuff mass audiences care about.
This is why I don't like writing in a big group.
It's smart. It's a smart idea, and a smart crowd will appreciate it. And I'm not gonna dumb it down for some bonehead mass audience!

Oh and by the way, the pauses can be taken out with something called editing.
