After grabbing the DVD set for season 4 (S4), I can't help but be amazed at the jump in quality between seasons 3 and 4. I've watched each ep from season 4 at least 3 times now, and I'm still watching at least one a night.
Season 3 had some great episodes, but the show really seemed to kick things into the next gear with S4. The arcing storyline of the Jerry pilot, something which I never liked from watching the eps in syndication, was REALLY well done and funny. The season seems to flow much more smoothly than previous seasons did, and the writing is definitely tighter and more focused.
I'm anxiously looking forward to season 5, which is right now my favorite season of all of them. However, the way S4 has shaped up my feelings might lead to some rankings being jumbled...
Does anyone else see a difference? What do you think it is?

I think it's just sort of a natural thing. The characters have become more developed, esp. Kramer. The writers probably felt they had more freedom, if not a little less pressure. I also think the addition of George's parents and Newman as recurring characters added a lot to the show.

perhaps its sort of like dating a girl, with each season equalling one date. First date, you're not sure what to do. Just trying to introduce yourself and make sure you get a second date. By the third or fourth date, you're ready to have sex. And by the seventh or eighth date, you're tired of her and ready to cancel the series.

I always thought Elaine was the most changed character in the series by a landslide. Ya, Kramer got played around with, too. But he was almost a side character at the start and then slowly matured into Kramer. Elaine pretty much did a 180 as far as personality is concerned.

A 180 in 180 episodes.

Yea the best thing about Season 4 is not only the classic eps, but also the links between each eps, make no mistake though S4 had some duds, like Trip Pt 1 and Wallet, but every season was like that, as for characters changing, Elaine changed big time in season 7, and George went from paranoid and insecure to roaring at every single person.

But if he could just take it down a notch this is a perfect example, "These breads have nuts in it", in previous seasons George would have said something along the lines of "did you just see what happened here, the waitress gave me nuts in my bread even though I specifically asked not to."

I would say that change in George occured more in season 8, after LD left. Season 7 still had paranoid George for the most part, as opposed to loudmouthed obnoxious george.
As for changes during seasons, I'd say a bigger change occured between season 2 and 3 than that of seasons 3 and 4. Season 2 hardly resembles Seinfeld, whereas season 3 is witty, original and brilliant, has some of my favorite episodes, and could be argued better than season 4. Some parts I don't like about season 4 are the bad Kramer jokes- he's watching "the bold and the beautiful" not very funny. Season 3 may be Jerry's best season as he has some great lines:
From the Red Dot:
"So...you're Jerry."
"So.......I'm Jerry."
From the suicide:
"I will show you the stooges."
And episodes like the parking SPACE are extremely funny and underrated.

One hundred and eighty episodes. One for every degree in a protractor.

One hundred and eighty episodes. One for every degree in a protractor. I put two protractors together and I came full circle.

Season 4 is the best. There are no greater three episodes aired in a row than The Contest / The Airport / The Pick...the writers were just on fire, there's no doubt.
But I have to say, I don't like The Pitch / The Ticket. And The Smelly Car is pretty weak as well.

Which ones? The Opposite is one of my all-time favourites, but I'm not very familiar with that season.
