Do the hardcore Seinfeld fans really believe that this was a show about nothing ?
I was watching an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm the other day (from series 2, can't remember the episode name) and something that Larry David said got me thinking.
Jason Alexander was talking about George, saying how George was "the idiot" character and Larry got offended saying how "The Contest" and eating the eclair out of the trash (and one or two other things I can't remember) were things that actually happened to him - that George was not an idiot, but "just funny".
It got me to thinking about how much of the show was based around actual events. Also that at least 3 of the 4 primary characters (was Elaine based on a real person ? I didn't think that she was but I could be wrong) were based on real people.
The show is so good that I don't believe that you can sum it up with one glib "soundbite" like "a show about nothing". Perhaps a more apt description would be "funny things that happen to real people, the observational humour of Jerry Seinfeld together with a large dash of the unreal comic stylings of Larry David" ?
Is "the show about nothing" a glib soundbite used to sell the show to a mass audience (as well as the NBC execs). And was that line used in the pitch to NBC ? Does anybody know ?

I know that "a show about conversation" is what Larry and Jerry originally pitched, which is pretty close to being a show about nothing, though that word was not used.

"a show about nothing" is a much funnier idea... and they took the idea pretty far... and we are all better off because of it.

You'd have to define something first before defining Nothing. Looking at previous Sitcoms and Soaps, something would mean, romantical entanglements and the format of precious sitcoms, which always ended with 'The Moral Of The Story Is.... The Characters developing to better people, finding happiness and teaching the viewing public something new everyday.
But Seinfeld to me was more a show about everything including nothing which is why so many of the situations portrayed are reflected in our own lives. They somehow found the formula of putting a True to Life-Like Show on Telly. If you wanna get really philosophical, maybe nothing is everything.
