Michael Jordan is often considered the best basketball player of all time. He was drafted by Chicago Bulls in as a 3rd draft pick in 1984. From the beginning, Jordan was an amazing player. In his rookie, year he led the Chicago Bulls averaging scoring with 28.2 points per game. By his third year, he was averaging over 37 points per game. Seven straight seasons in a row Michael Jordan didn’t average less than 30 points per game. Yet with such offensive prowess, the Chicago Bulls were unable to win a title.
When the glorious decade we all love and call the 90’s began, things exploded for Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. During 1990-1991, Michael Jordan led the entire National Basketball League by scoring an average of 31.5 points per game. This season the Bulls finally got the title Jordan had been yearning for. After his victory, Jordan cried in the locker room; following the emotional triumph, Michael Jordan carried the Larry O’Brien trophy with his dad by his side during his post-game celebration.
The following two seasons the Chicago Bulls brought home the coveted title, making three consecutive ring wins for Jordan and the Bulls. By this time, America was in love with Michael Jordan and the Bulls. During grade school, I remember Michael Jordan being everywhere. It’s almost like he was there with us, seeing all the jerseys and sportswear everywhere. Not to mention the constant chatter about Michael Jordan and the Bulls. From boy to young men, we all idolized and entranced by Michael Jordan’s dominance on the court.
At the end of the 1993, postseason things began to take a turn for Jordan’s personal and professional life. Michael Jordan had been exposed for gambling the night before in Atlantic City; shortly thereafter, San Diego businessman Richard Esquinas, published a book making claims as to how much money Jordan had won on golf bets. This began an investigation into Jordan’s gambling, but it was later found there was no evidence that Jordan had violated NBA regulations.
The summer of that same year, Michael Jordan’s father, James Jordan, was murdered. Shortly after the investigation began, detectives came to the conclusion that James Jordan had been murdered by two men, Martin Demery and Daniel Andre Green, in a robbery gone. After this chain of events, Michael Jordan announced his retirement from basketball in October of that year. To the surprise and disappointment of so many- especially my friends and myself- that was the end of his amazing, and relatively short lived basketball career.
When it comes to basketball in the 90’s, Michael Jordan was an icon. The start of his career started as abruptly as it finished- with first three years of the decade winning rings, then going straight into retirement, leaving us in awe. Along with his legacy, he also left behind a wonder how much more could have been. Michael Jordan will always be remembered in the hearts of us sports loving 90’s kids.
