I think it's a pretty decent episode on the whole. Like I said, it has some good Jerry and George dialogue, and we are also privy to the beginning of Elaine as the 'Queen of Confrontation'. And Kramer's there with his canteloupe, which pretty much sums it up. It's largely devoid of incident, but in a good way, I'd have to say.

The Ex-Girlfriend is the only episode of Seinfeld I'm always finding myself saying, "What was that one about, again?". It seriously does take me a long time to remember. But ya, I obviously didn't really care much for that episode either.

I think it's so easy that it's hard. So little happens that, for some reason, it's hard to remember (I have the same problem). Basically, Jerry goes out with George's ex-girlfriend and Kramer has a cantaloupe

For me, The Phone Message partly sums up why the Finale falls so flat as far as I'm concerned. The Seinfeld Four are found guilty of being entirely self-interested, and yet here we have Jerry agreeing to 'make the switch' for George when there's nothing in it for him (this is even more pointedly the case with The Marble Rye - not the most benign action in terms of mugging an old lady, but he's still putting everything on the line for his best buddy!)
Anyway, as far as this topic goes, do you think it's fair to say that Jerry and the gang were nicer people in the earlier seasons?

Oh ya, definately. They start off pretty normal. But then as people started to expect how they were going to react, they had to keep exagerating the characters further and further in order to shock the audience.

Yeah, much to Mike Costanza's chagrin, as they kept making George progressively more petty, selfish and small-minded!

The Phone Message is an awesome eppy. One of the top 3 of that season.

The early seasons have a charm, but season 3 has a similar charm and is obviously much better. The Ex-Girlfriend is only decent, with plenty of moments to keep it watchable but the plot isn't interesting. The Ticket sucks; The Pitch is the only one that could be described as genius out of that foursome of episodes.

I've just been re-watching a lot of the Season 3 stuff, and it's really a joy. It does have a similar look and feel to the earlier episodes, but you can see how high the standards have become already. So many great little stories, carried off with such economy. And the chemistry between the principals is fantastic. Anyone getting into it at the time would have been able to see that one of the great shows of all time was unfolding before their eyes.

I do enjoy season 1 and 2 alot, not as fast paced as the later ones but still great in it's own way. Plus they have a nice 90s feeling to them

I love the 90's vibe from the early seasons. It adds to their charm. I also enjoy the slow-pace of the early seasons.
The first season of Seinfeld has its funny moments(The Stakeout and The Stock Tip are my favorite episodes from the season), but overall I find them to be more interesting than funny(especially 'Good News Bad News').
I think Season 2 was just as great as the other seasons (The Jacket is one of my favorite episodes), and by Season 3 I think the show finally found its 'thing'.
I think the early years of Seinfeld(especially Season 2) are underrated.
