The really early episodes of Seinfeld, Seasons One to Two, seem to get a bit of a hard time from fans. Personally, I love them. Don't get me wrong, I don't deny that the show went on to greater things, but the early episodes, when George was basically a nice guy and Elaine was successful and together, still strike me as having a distinctive charm of their own. 'The Phone Message' is one of my favourite eps, and I love the fact that the characters had a bit of warmth about them - something we're not accustomed to associating with Seinfeld!
What does anyone think of the first eighteen episodes? Maybe an interesting question to ask is whether you prefer the early stuff to the controversial final seasons, after larry david left?

This reminds me of the talks about seasons 1 and 2 of Simpsons. In both shows, they start off a lot slower paced and the characters are slightly off, but there's a charm about them.
I like the first two seasons of Seinfeld, and I especially like The Ex-Girlfriend. It's definitely a show about nothing, and it has all the Seinfeldian insights that would characterize the show, especially "man-man-girl" and Elaine not wanting to sit in back.
A few of those season 2 eppy's really suck though, like The Busboy

I definitely prefer them to season 8 and 9 (especially 8)

I steadfastly maintain that The Ex Girlfriend is the worst Seinfeld episode of all time. Yeah, it's about nothing, but unlike the other shows that are about nothing, this is the only one without any plot!
What makes it the worst is the sudden random and arbitrary ending. I'm sorry, this episode sucks.

Early seasons have better storylines, in fact some of the storylines in Season 2/3 are slightly better than that what you'd find in season 4, though 4 would have more laugh riots.
Season 3 beats Season 9 by a landslide, one of the main problems with the final season wasn't just some weak storylines, but the writers became far too lazy and the subtle humour and lines which you'd find previously went out the window, also scenes were far too rushed, every minute bubble noises, serenity now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree about your season 3 vs season 4 assessment- I find season 3 more entertaining with not one episode relying heavily on a running plotline, unlike the seasone 4 eps the ticket, the wallet, the watch, all fairly forgettable in my eyes. Season 3 didn't have any boring episdoes like this.
I also agree that season 3 beats season 9 big time- for the same reasons you mention. Season 3 is up there at the top with season 5 and 7 as the best three seasons, with seasons 6, 4 and 8 all close behind.

I loved the earliest ones as well. Especially The Stakeout. The stuff with Jerry and Elaine was funny (the party, Jerry ignoring Elaine, Elaine not knowing Jerry was interested in Vanessa), "quone", George and Jerry trying to come up with their story and a name (which evolves into Vandelay).
I even like The Ex-Girlfriend, but then again I am one of the biggest Seinfeld apologists there is.

The Ex-Girlfriend has some good Jerry and George stuff, I think. 'You're too nice a guy', 'You're a humanitarian!' etc. Cracks me up.
I agree with you on the Season 3 vs. Season 4 score. I always found the wallet and the watch sagas rather tedious. And I used to think I liked The Trip until I saw it again and realised that a lot of the stuff I liked about it was actually in The Keys! Schoolboy error, I know . . .

Oh, and you've got to love George's break-up monologue in The Ex-Girlfriend. "Son-of-a-BANG! Son-of-a-BOOM!" Brilliant stuff.

I agree about some of the season 4 tedium. The Pitch / Ticket and Wallet / Watch episodes are definitely genius episodes, but they become hard to watch for some reason. And I think The Trip is just subpar anyway.

Trip Pt 2 is decent but Pt1 is awful. The Watch is good for Kramer/Reston and George's meeting with Darlymple, but the whole watch supplot is something you'd find in an below average sitcom.

Of course, of course . . . Marlene doesn't like his act! It just shows the different mentality of the writers at that time, that they felt they had to explain the end of Jerry's relationships. Later on, it's a different girlfriend every week and you don't even question it; it's just an immutable law of the universe.

I thought that ending was funny, especially after you've seen the bloopers
