Candy cigarettes were a candy introduced in the early 20th century made out of chalky sugar, bubblegum or chocolate, wrapped in paper as to resemble cigarettes.
The United States considered banning the candy cigarettes in 1970 and again in 1991, but it was not passed into federal law.
Who remembers these candy cigarettes? I remember always getting some of these in the 90's on Halloween, and thought I would post about it. I have never smoked and never plan to, but I do remember these. I can't remember if they tasted any good, but I do remember them. Anyone else remember getting these as a kid?

Yeah. Candy cigarettes were cool. They were kind of . . . for lack of a better word, chalky. But something about them tasted good. I mostly remember buying them in a small town when visiting my grandparents. So I remember an ancient downtown building during the middle of summer whenever I think about them. It was awesome how they had different "brands" of them, even though they all tasted the same. Just because you wanted to be like your parents and choose your preferred brand. My mom used to smoke, so I definitely knew how that felt. Even though I was always vehemently against her smoking (Even hiding her cigarettes once or twice ph34r.gif ). I still thought eating candy cigarettes was extremely cool.

Oh yes, I remember all of those - chalky, chocolate and bubble gum - but only the chocolate ones were wrapped so that they looked like real cigarettes. The chalk candy ones I knew as the Popeye candy sticks and they were the best but I also liked the chocolate ones because I could shock little children with them - they were seeing me unwrapping and eating the inside of a cigarette and didn't know it was chocolate.
They slowly started disappearing over time, not because they were banned or something but those were some kind of "in"-candy - candy that was first bought by absolutely everyone au masse but then after some time the people grew tired of it because they already had too many. And after less and less people were buying them they also were offered less and less at shops until they disappeared.

I remember candy cigarettes and I actually remember liking them quite a bit. My favorite was the chalky kind for some reason. I'd have a pack of those gone in less than a day as a kid. Hell, with candy cigarettes I was just as bad with them as my dad was with the real deal. He'd go out to a local gas station to buy him a pack and I'd go with to get me some candy ones. Guess the old saying like father like son truly exists.
Only had the chocolate kind once and never had the bubble gum ones. I do remember the chocolate ones looking like the real deal. One time I took a cheap lighter my dad had and tried to light it. Wanted to see if people would come up to me and think I was really smoking. Nobody did and I got stained with hot melted chocolate. Terrible idea as a kid.

The bubble gum ones were super popular at my school. I don't think I ever saw a chocolate one though.

I remember the candy cigarettes. Man, my mom would buy them for me all the time when I was a kid. My grandparents hated those and would try to stop me from eating them (as it would encourage me to want to smoke some cigarettes), but I couldn't get enough of them. Miss these candies. Are they still around?
