Its an interesting piece of discussion.. worst of seinfeld.. I always though about it.. I dont consider episodes like the dog or the subway bad.. cause they were well scripted. It just happend that they were not very funny. But they did have a typical LD appeal to them. I think as long as LD was with seinfeld he didnt allow even a single episode go overboard or slip away with any half baked plots. I felt that we do have a few episodes after 7th season with some half baked plots here and there. Also a few of the kramer's tracks were not as funny as the writters would have thought of. So neways... here goes my list of the worst of seinfeld episodes
It is in the order starting from the WORST..
1) The Suesie : Haphazardly written script. The whole suesie track had a good potential to create hilarious situations of mistaken identity. But writters could not handle it properly and stretched it a bit too far (to the funeral). See this is something LD would never do. He would never let humor stretch beyond its limit. The same applies to Kramer and George track. The whole "swirvling" scene looked so forced and lame that it was the first time i felt that they couldnt get it right this time.. well when you make 180 episodes.. you are bound to get wrong sometime.
2)The Burning : It looks like many already have this in mind. Its a bad bad episode because the longest track of the episode.. (Kramer and mickey track) was not funny at all. It is always a risk with a character like Kramer. If the writter doesnt keep it in control then its going to blow the whole episode. Thats exactly what happened here. To me, Mickey is the worst character ever appeared on seinfeld. Add to this jerry's tractor story and Geroge's toe-thumb idea. It really sucked.
3)The Serenity Now : I know many would disagree with this choice. But let me tell you that this episodes had two of the most half baked tracks in the entire seinfeld scripts. Jerry turning sentimental was very arbitrary and without any logic. Him turning back to being himself after hearing George was also not convincing. The events happen a bit too fast to digest. Mr. Lippman plunging on to elain and renouncing his religion was also very very weak. So basically except for Frank's yelling "Serenity Now" and telling that "the doctor wasn't very specific about how you say it", everything else in this episode is inadequate and unconvincing. George's track wasn't half baked but it was too short and not very funny. So even though this episode might end up in someone's top ten list, I just think that from script-writters point of view it never worked.
Other than these three I never felt that they went wrong in any of the episodes. Sure, there are some tracks which are absolutely stupid and not-funny... like the track between kramer and newman in "the butter shave".. or Kramer's double-wishing track in "the betrayal" but that doesnt make the entire episodes bad. This is because these were not the major tracks in those episodes. I personally found "the betrayal" to be a piece of brilliant scripting and direction. The point is that apart from these three I never thought that the entire episode is crap. Thats probably why seinfeld happens to be the greates show ever made..177 out 180... thats a success rate of 98.33 % Thats something.
