Groundbreaking in early years, falters badly later For years 'Roseanne' was one of the world's biggest sitcoms, and fully deserved its reputation. The character of Roseanne was the antithesis of typical US sitcom moms; acerbic, flawed, and equipped with an often biting wit. Some of the show's lines, particularly from the early nineties, will remain classics forever - the scene when Roseanne's sister Jackie tries and tries to tell their deaf aunt that their father is dead, eventually giving up and saying 'he's fine, he sends his love' is unforgettable. While Roseanne Barr/Arnold is undoubtedly the star, her chemistry with co-stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert really mad the show a classic.
Sadly, the brilliance of the show's early years will be forever overshadowed by the horrible decline of the final few seasons. New ideas were very thin on the ground, with an increasing reliance on theme and spoof episodes (including Roseanne going back in time to discover the meaning of Thanksgiving) and guest appearances. Also Roseanne Barr/Arnold's personal life began to seep increasingly into the script to detrimental effect: for example, Roseanne and Dan are told their unborn baby will be a girl, but this is later ignored and she gives birth to a boy, purely because the actress had a boy in real life.
This showed lack of respect for the viewer, as did the constant recasting of daughter Becky. Originally played by Lecy Goranson, Sarah Chalke took over in the mid nineties, before Goranson returned two years later - but then Chalke would take the part occasionally as Goranson nipped in and out of the series, and eventually, Chalke took over full-time again. The ridiculousness of this, and plots such as Roseanne's traditionalist mother coming out as a lesbian, were the final nail in the coffin of a once great show.

Roseanne Series I absolutely love Roseanne. I watch it every time its on T.V. Its a very real family not one of those T.V. families who try to be perfect. It address many issues that regular families deal with on a day to day basis. I guess the main reason I am drown to this show is because it reminds me of my aunts family so I guess it hit close to home. I am very pleased with the way the show ended that was a very tough episode for me. I have never really cried on any other T.V. show but I cried for a little bit after that. I wish things would have ended less sad. But thats Roseanne they address everything there was no other way to end it. I know I will be watching this show until the stop airing it on T.V. And if they have come out with a series on tape then I will buy it as well.

Roseanne: One of the best sitcoms of all time I never watched Roseanne much as a child because I was only 5 when it started and obviously didn't appreciate sitcoms at that time. Now I've had a chance to see the show in syndication and I'm so glad I tuned in. This show was one the best sitcoms ever produced. It didn't always make me laugh, but good sitcoms shouldn't. I love a bit of drama in sitcoms, as it makes them all the more realistic, and Roseanne had plenty of Drama. The final season got far too ridiculous and over the top to be credible, nor could it be classed as "funny" at that point but the show ended really well and wrapped up the previous 9 years very nicely. May the show live on on DVD.

A good TV show that always kept ya relating to your probloms Rosanne will go down as one of those shows that focused the everyday lives of what every American would go throw from time to time. Such as raising kids, trying to get by when it comes to money.
You've got Roseanne Connor who plays a at times loud mouth, sarcastic, tough mom who can drive anyone nuts, she picks on her older sister Jackie, she takes cheep shots at her husband Dan,and when it comes to her 3 kids. Well its safe to say her only son DJ was her favorite.
Dan Connor was the husband who always worked hard but always had a sarcastic side to him just like Roseanne. But at times Dan would show he can be a bit scary when he gets mad or when he gets into fights with someone. Just ask Fisher.
Becky Connor was the stuck up and some times pushy older sister who was always at the center of insults and jokes from her younger sister Darleene. She would go onto fall in love with, run away with, and get married to the famly enemy turned famly nice guy Mark.
Darlenne Connor was the real sarcastic one who didn't smile much and just kind of kept to herself but always had a joke or insult for her older sister Becky or younger brother DJ. And at times she wasn't afraid to get sarcastic with her mom and dad.
DJ is the youngest son. Quiet at times and some times up to no good. Is always ready to step up and rat out his 2 sisters to Roseanne.
This show was really good and funny until the final season when John Goodman left the show for awhile to do other movies and TV show appearances but he did come back half way through the season. But non the less the show will go down as a classic. You can still catch the reruns on nick at night. 10/10

Great until they won the lottery Roseanne is one of the funniest shows ever made. I love it! I think John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf are a couple of the best actors out there. It was refreshing to see a family going through real life struggles such as losing jobs and creating fears on how the parents will be able to make house payments, put food on the table, etc. instead of "Aw, shucks! Oh well, next week it won't matter, everything will fall into place and be rosy again." I really enjoy the reruns and watch them all the time. Except the end. I don't even bother with the last season or so. It became a horrible show after the family won the lottery. It was so very, very stupid. I watch the episodes following that and shake my head because they are so dumb. An episode devoted to weird TV Producers coming to the home to pitch ideas about a TV movie based on the family. Just bad. One episode featured Roseanne kung-fu fighting somebody on top of a moving train. That is an episode I saw only once, so I don't know the details...when they show it in reruns I turn it off in the beginning. And one episode where there is the grandmother, who they had turned into a lesbian, and Leon and their lovers playing poker (I think...they were just sitting around talking). Seeing an episode like that is so far from the original idea of the family and loud kids and real people problems. The character of Bev was so funny as the mother/mother-in-law who annoys her daughters, in the beginning, then she turned gay and the jokes about everyone hating her got old. Also, a baby, Jerry, was added to the family and we saw little or no interaction with him and his sisters and brother, unless they were just holding him in the background. I wish the show would have stayed true to itself. And that last episode...please! Although unique to feature such a huge twist...why do that? You're telling me that Becky was with David and Darlene was with Mark instead of the other way around as we watched for years, so every episode before that are we supposed to disregard, as it was a joke? I'd prefer to just disregard the final episode. I would love to see a reunion, but I guess it would be too confusing and could not include John Goodman since they killed him off. The first few seasons are gold. The end, not.

Roseanne, though an unlikely choice at first, turned out to be one of my favorite shows of all time As someone who usually favors more serious entertainment, I was pleasantly surprised when I started watching Roseanne. I thought it would be really funny but I did not think it to be anything more than another family oriented comedy, full of sarcasm, with underlying hints at emotional depth. I was bored one day, so I started watching re-runs and next thing I knew, I was hooked! Even though it is the kind of show I thought I wouldn't like, I started giving into it. Having presumed the acting would be sub par or the plots just like every other show out there, I tried to pre-judge it and failed miserably. The show is so freakin' funny, yet still has moments that are dramatic and serious. The plots were (usually) totally realistic (except for the last season's few quirky episodes-which were still funny) and I felt that anyone could relate to something about them. On the occasions that the show wasn't portraying daily life, it would tend to veer towards the bizarre, yet still kept my interest just the same. Towards the end there were a few twists and turns that were completely unexpected, but there was a reason for them and they were still fun to watch because they were so different. The actors were great and I ended up liking every single one of them! Roseanne is unique in the way that, unlike most shows, all of the cast is irreplaceable -even though Becky's character gets the switcharoo on and off throughout the entire show! In the end, they all did fantastic jobs! The show went in a direction that most shows don't quite go. They covered the basic family-sitcom grounds but unearthed something amazingly new and fresh. I wish Roseanne was still on today. They should bring it back!!! Why is Roseanne not on t.v. anymore? It sure beats the hell out of the O.C. any day! By the time I saw the last episode, I was a true fan. I didn't like the ending though... It was just something I was not prepared for. After all the time I spent watching that show, I never thought it would end in such a way. It really seemed unplanned and lacked the integrity that the show had going for it all those years before. Despite the flaws, Roseanne has ended up being one of my favorite shows ever. I never thought it would be. IT ROCKS!!!

A true classic comedy 10/10
When all is said and done, Roseanne will probably be known as one of the classics of Comedy.
It wasn't a perfect 9 seasons, and with all the rumors and brouhaha about on-the-set squabbling thanks in part to it's Diva title star, it was amazing how professional and excellent the show actually was.
But Roseanne was great at mixing comic elements with serious topic matters. In season six for instance, Roseanne deals with her abuse as a child when she spanks her son D.J. (Michael Fishman in one of his best moments on the show)for stealing a car.
The moment was very serious, but the show's sidebar of her rival Leon (the hilarious Martin Mull) trying to rally Jackie and Nancy (Laurie Metcalf and Sandra Bernhard in equally comic moments)against Roseanne in decision making was just hilarious: Nancy: "And we decided our official bird of the diner is the Toucan." Roseanne "Oh really well this mine." (she proceeds to give Nancy the bird, with her other hand covering it of course.
The Show lost it's focus in coming seasons with it's frequent use of flashback scenes using classic t.v. shows for a episodes catalyst, but still had glorious moments in certain episodes.
Many thought the show's finale was a slap in the face to the entire show's premise. But after watching it a few times over the years, it becomes easy to understand Roseanne's issues with the series in its latter days and her decision to end the show in the manner she did.
Roseanne was definitely a comic gem for it time and in the new millennium, it still a relevant show even in today's world.

Roseanne TV series I love all of her 9 seasons. She's a great comedian/actress. I have all of her TV series, movies. I think she's the greatest. I would love to meet her & tell her in person. I watch all of her Roseanne TV show reruns every night on Nick @ nite. I can really relate to her on that show with everyone on the cast. The only thing that really didn't seem like "them" on the show was the lottery episodes for the last couple of seasons. Don't get me wrong, it was nice to see them "live good" but it kind of took away the show of how they really were. Just regular people without all the materialistic glamor. It was okay. Roseanne is the best. Also, I really liked everyone else's character on the shows too. Almost 10 years of loving it. Really funny person.

A classic! "Roseanne" is a show that combines two key elements in a sitcom; Well-written(and well acted) comedy with real-life situations.
I think we can all agree that more often than not, comedy in general is much stronger when it's dealing with topics that the majority can relate to. That's exactly what "Roseanne" did. The show took real-life situations(mortgage payments, jobs, money, poverty, children etc..) and poked fun at them in a light-hearted yet easily relaitable(Sp) manner. Also it was one of the first popular sitcoms to say "Real life isn't always pretty people in cute situations". I think they hit that point "out of the park".
The show follows the life of the Conner Family, but mainly(as you've most likely guessed), the Mother/Wife, Roseanne. She's the dominant character throughout the entire series. A strong-willed, intelligent woman, who is(as are all the characters) not without her faults. Such as being quite stubborn and self-centered. But all in all she's truly wise.
The show had brilliant writing and great acting. One can actually see Roseanne's progression as an actress from season one to season two. She quickly moves from dealing out a barrage of "one-liners" to that and so much more. By the middle of the series I have no fear in saying that she became a great actress who could do comedy as well as drama. In fact some of my favourite scenes are when she stretches her acting abilities to show some hard-hitting truths. Such as the episode in which she flies "off the handle" and repeatedly spanks(quite hard) D.J. for stealing her car. The emotional struggles she soon encounters(many due to the fact that she too was hit by her father) are quite great and if she didn't win an Emmy for that then a huge mistake was made by the awards committee.
But it's the balance that this show has, between comedy and harsh reality that makes it so strong and solid. So many shows try to achieve this but never can have both and seem as "real" and "fluid" as "Roseanne" did.
You'll hear many fans(and critics) shy away from the last season. I'll admit, it went way out of reality. And the final episodes truly shocking plot-twist reclaims some of that true-to-life feeling. Although I would say that it doesn't do so as smoothly as other points in the show's history. In fact the last episode is comparable to a "smack in the face". But even with this show's odd last season and whip-lash ending, its not enough to tarnish the entire show in my eyes. In fact, the quality of work leading up to the last season is so strong that I feel it redeems itself overall.
If you've never seen this show and would like an insightful and funny look at typical life struggles, give "Roseanne" a try.

An absolute ABC classic! 10/10 "ROSEANNE," in my opinion, is an absolute ABC classic! I haven't seen every episode, but I still enjoyed it. There are many episodes that I enjoyed. One of them was where Darlene (Sara Gilbert) got drunk and trashed the house. If you want to know why, you'll have to have seen it for yourself. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that everyone always gave a good performance, the production design was spectacular, the costumes were well-designed, and the writing was always very strong. In conclusion, even though it can be seen in syndication now, I strongly recommend you catch it just in case it goes off the air for good.

Great Show 10/10 Roseanne is one of the best sitcoms. Many people dislike it because they feel that the show dosen't show wholesome values. This may be true, but this show wasn't based upon what we wish life was like. It is based upon actual life of a family in Lanford, Illinois. Unlike the Cosby Show and Full House, every problem they have isn't solved in 30 minutes and everyone isn't happy when the show ends.
The show centers around a lower-middle class family who is just trying to make it through life. The mother, Roseanne Conner, is played by Roseanne Barr. She is hilarious. The father, Dan Conner, is a hard working man who is also funny. Becky, played by Lecy Goranson and Sara Chalke, is the somewhat bratty oldest child. Darlene, played by Sara Gilbert, is the sarcastic, tomboy of the family. And D.J., played mostly by Michael Fisherman, is the baby of the family. Jackie, played by Laurie Metcalf, is Roseanne's sister and is also hilarious.
IMO, D.J. was somewhat pointless. He was rarely shown and when he was, he didn't do much. I must admit, though, that as he grew older, he became more visible. As far as homosexuals go, I think they turned too many people gay. It is disappointing that Sara Gilbert is actually a lesbian in real life. I do find the first episodes a little more appealing, but the later ones are still good.

Great Show but Just a Little Inapropriate 10/10 Rosanne is so funny! This show is hilarious with its witty cast members and their witty lines. The plots are always excellent with how they portray the financial struggling family with so much hidden love that always helps them through their problems. Its a great show with a great cast with a great script but I think it may be a little inappropriate for the channel its usually on- NickatNite. In my perspective- NickatNite is a family channel and the scripts on Rosanne do seem some what inappropriate. Some of the plots are very much more for a more mature audience but thats just the way I see it. It is an excellent show, and I'm very glad that they keep it on NickatNite as long as they have- they still are keeping it running so thats terrific!

Great show 10/10 I think Roseanne did an excellent job of portraying the true typical American family unlike other sitcoms where all family members enjoy being around each other twenty-four seven. Roseanne is a less wacky version of the Simpsons and Roseanne came out about the time when people I suppose were tired of seeing sitcom families consisted with smiling faces and simple problems such as the cat being stuck in the tree or the teacher getting upset because beaver wears a shirt to school with a monster on the front.Come on! Those aren't real problems . My cat had more problems with fleas than some of these earlier sitcoms. Then again you had sitcoms that probably overdid a lot themes that were identified as Very Special Episodes(coughs*Different Strokes*coughs) As I was saying, Roseanne came out when dysfunctional families along with Married with Children and the Simpsons became the new thing for a sitcom Those are just The reason why I liked Roseanne so much was she wasn't afraid to say whatever was on her mind, whether you agreed with her or not.
I am a new fan of this show,I did not experiencing any of the shock and awe expressions from the themes of the show, because am used to TV shows , such as South Park pushing the envelope all the time now. I'm tired of seeing shows like 7th Heaven and Everwood, where all the family members have no life and goes snooping around to see if the daughter got her period(Ugghhh!) I think Sara Gilbert did an excellent job with her Portrayal of Darlene , because she made her so realistic and represented a whole array of girls in America , that previously was not portrayed in a realistic manner. Her character ,at the time, was the most original and I saw more changes in her character than anybody else on the show. She went through many phases such as depression , having a mate, and finding out what she was really interested in for the rest of her life, instead of what everyone else was interested in for her. Even though it was not original to portray most girls growing out of there tomboy phase, I like how she did not get immediately interested in dating and going to social events, but went through a road filled with confusion and depression, and that road ends when She meets David(who she could have treated better). At the end, Darlene just turned into a redundant cynical machine that got tiring to me. I was surprise she wanted a kid.
All in all, Roseanne is a great sitcom to watch.

I love Roseanne! 10/10 Roseanne spent its first 6 seasons as one of the Top 5 rated shows on television and brought up issues no other sitcom was willing to talk about. Roseanne paved the way for shows like Seinfeld (Roseanne made it common practice for stand-up comics to get their own TV shows) and Will and Grace (Roseanne made it OK to have gay characters on TV). These are just a few prime examples of how without Roseanne some of the most beloved TV shows may have never hit the airwaves.
Roseanne made it OK to talk about the darker side of the American family, bring up touchy subjects such as spouse abuse, substance abuse, show that women are just as equal as men and money issues that everyone deals with, while bringing gay characters to the forefront of American television. It did all of this while having one of the greatest television casts of all time. Roseanne Barr won an Emmy for her role as Roseanne, John Goodman was nominated 6 times for best actor as Dan, Laurie Metcalf won 3 Emmys and was nominated a total of 4 times for her role as Jackie and Sara Gilbert was nominated twice for best supporting actress as Darlene.
Roseanne blended comedy and drama perfectly. Clearly the last 3 seasons (the last one in particular) were not the greatest. However, having a grand total of 6 amazing seasons is enough to say this show is the greatest to ever hit television!

What A Way To Close Out The 90's 10/10 I would have to say that this show really hit home for me because it always has a way of reminding us of what life as a family is really like. I mean I would watch this show and think to myself "Yes this is what life was like in the 90's." John Goodman is the best as Dan Coonner sort of the head of household. I have a tape of the first season episodes and one of the best episodes on this tape is when Bev Harris comes to visit and Darlene (Sarah Chalke) gets jealous because older sister Becky gets to go out and she doesn't. I would have to say there are a lot of people who can relate to this show one way or another. Also, the episode when Jackie gives birth is also one of my favorites.
